Activated Carbon Filters

Filtration

The scorched nut has never been as popular as when it has taken the commercial and chemical term of Activated Carbon. This activated carbon is used to filter out all kinds of impurities. If you’ve ever had a drink from a Brita water filter or a PUR water filter you’ve probably seen the residue of an activated carbon water filter. The little black flecks you get in your water from time to time are actually a porous mineral used to capture impurities in your water and trap them in your filter.

You might consider changing your filter if you’re getting many of those black granules in your water. It probably means your filter is not holding together as well as you would like.

If you have any questions regarding the process behind active carbon filtering (ACF for the remainder of this post), then you might consider reading this great summary of the uses of ACF at the wiki link leading to activated carbon. You may also enjoy this great video of how to make your own filtration system at home as a science project. One can purchase activated carbon at their local pet store where aquarium supplies are sold. Air Filtration

There are other things that you can filter with activated carbon. ACF’s are used to filter out bad smells and flavours and chemicals activated carbon is a porous substance that allows many things in but does not let much out. It can be used even to soak up chemical spills and absorb poisonous mercury. There have been all kinds of legal decisions made about the proper amount of carbon that can be burned containing poisonous substances like mercury. You can read more about these as linked in the above Wikipedia post. There are also great Youtube posts on air filtration using activated carbon as well.

Distillation and Filtration

One other area in which ACF is used is in the preparation of alcohol. Moonshine and home stills use active carbon to filter their liquids too. This is a substance that few people know much about and we’d like to discuss it more with you – our readers – in the days to come.
